The Digital unit within the Office of Communications at the University of Virginia is seeking a Web Content Specialist to help our team source, manage, and curate content for the University’s key digital platforms, including UVA Today and the University’s homepage. This includes handling daily development of the UVA Today email product and accompanying stories, daily oversight of the University events calendar, weekly maintenance of the virginia.edu search capability, and updating content on other owned websites as needed.
Reporting to the Director of Development & User Experience, the Web Content Specialist will execute and coordinate various day-to-day digital development responsibilities and support the team in planning and deploying projects across the larger department. The ideal candidate must thrive in a fast-paced environment and have an eye for detail. They should demonstrate strong communication and collaboration skills and have sincere interest in digital development, user experience, and marketing communications.
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Director of Development & User Experience and web developers in executing plans for key sites and platforms.
- Support day-to-day development activities for UVA Today, working with colleagues across the department.
- Create and design content streams that result in positive user experiences for key University audiences.
- Leverage content management systems (CMS) and process so that content is leveraged across multiple sites, digital platforms, and authors. This includes setting up and maintaining content for pages/sections and campaign landing pages within the web CMS.
- Create and maintain multimedia, including photo galleries, slideshows, and videos embedded in web pages.
- Verify content meets accessibility standards, including confirming display compatibility within all browsers and across mobile devices.
- Maintain metadata and other inputs in the system to optimize search engine results.
- Verify that all content is approved through proper channels and systems prior to posting.
- Work with the web developers to ensure quality assurance testing of all new web properties, by managing the browser and device testing.
Required Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Web Development, Media Arts or related field.
- At least one year of related experience.
Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Results-oriented and self-motivated, with strong organization skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to balance multiple priorities to meet deadlines, both independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge and/or experience with HTML and content management systems.
- Experience working with Drupal, and knowledge of CSS and web analytics is a plus.
- Skills in creating and editing various types of web content ranging from general text to visuals. Ability to create and edit images using software tools such as Adobe Photoshop,
- Adobe Illustrator or Adobe InDesign is a plus.
- Closely follow trends in digital content, such as writing for the web and SEO, with interest in continuous learning and seeking opportunities for growing proficiency.
